We’re In this Together - Shorts
A diverse collection of AAPI short films centered on the theme We’re in This Together. These stories reflect the strength of community, the bonds of family and friendship, and the resilience found in shared experiences. Together, they offer an uplifting reminder of connection, belonging, and hope.
2:30 pM - 4:30 PM
The reverberations of the Vietnam War extend far beyond the battlefield, echoing through families, communities, and generations. These two short films bring together voices from both North and South Vietnam, as well as Vietnamese Americans whose lives remain intertwined with its aftermath. Honest and unflinching, they reflect on how history continues to shape identity, belonging, and the search for healing.

MĀHŪ: A Trans-Pacific Love Letter is a short documentary about an innovative theater production by master hula teacher, Kumu Hula Patrick Makuakāne, which aims to reclaim and celebrate the traditional place of honor and respect given to māhū (transgender) people.

Filmmaker Elizabeth Ai embarks on a project to tell a story of joy and youthful defiance as she explores a musical phenomenon in the 1980s known to Vietnamese American teens as new wave. As she delves into the lives of family members and icons of the new wave scene, a surprising and powerful story emerges about lasting effects of the Vietnam War and displacement on the community's mental health, and how that impact carries over generations.
