Director/Producer: Shubhangi Shekhar
Shubhangi Shekhar is a multi-hyphenate creator with development, digital production, directing, writing, marketing, and journalism experience from award-winning and critically acclaimed global media companies such as A24, Verizon Media, Roy Kapur Films, Condé Nast Entertainment, and Patreon.
She was also part of the inaugural class of The Salon Mentorship Program for up-and-coming South Asian talent in the directing track, under the mentorship of TV director Anu Valia. She received the Pano Microgrant as a producer, and the Brown Girl Magazine x The Cosmos Care Fund Microgrant as a writer and director for her projects in 2022. She was a WIF Creative Documentary Producing Fellow from 2023-2024, and completed the Netflix DART (Documentary Archival Researcher Training) program in 2024.
Along with producing, directing, and developing a handful of independent projects, she has also supported and mentored up-and-coming South Asian writers as one of the writer’s room leads with the Rickshaw Film Foundation. And when no one’s watching, she expresses herself through her poetry. Her artistic voice is fundamentally rooted in the cross-section between Western and South Asian cinema, and she aims to tell unique stories that gauge mass audiences across language, cultural, and gender barriers.
Moderator: Janelle Wang
Janelle Wang is an anchor for NBC Bay Area News, co-anchoring the 5 p.m. newscast alongside Jessica Aguirre and the 5:30 p.m. newscast with Raj Mathai. She also reports for the station’s 6 p.m. newscast.
Since joining NBC Bay Area, Wang has earned three Emmy Awards for her coverage of the Valley Fire in Middletown, the Ghost Ship warehouse fire in Oakland and the North Bay wildfires in Wine Country. Her reporting has taken her around the globe, including to Sochi, Russia, for the Winter Olympics and to Kansas City for the San Francisco Giants’ World Series victory.
Prior to NBC Bay Area, Wang spent more than eight years at KGO-TV ABC7 in San Francisco, where she covered a wide range of stories, from the deadly San Bruno gas explosion to the steroid scandal in professional sports. She also reported extensively on the Scott Peterson murder trial, with her courtroom notes reaching readers as far as South America and Europe.
